Lawn Problems
Lawn problems can arise due to various factors, including weather conditions, soil quality, grass species, lawn pests, lawn diseases, and lawn maintenance practices.
Some common lawn problems our customers encounter are:
Lawn Diseases
If grass is weak, fungal diseases such as fusarium patch, red thread, and dollar spot can affect the grass, especially during periods of warm, wet weather. Symptoms include discoloured patches, thinning grass, and fungal growth on the leaves.
Lawn Pests
Common lawn pests in the UK include chafer grubs, leatherjackets, and ants. They are most active in Spring and Autumn. These lawn pests can cause damage to grass roots, leading to yellow patch grass, thinning, and bare grass patches. Some of the damage is caused by wildlife looking for the pests.
Lawn Weeds
Common lawn weeds in the UK include dandelions, daisies, clover, and plantains. Weeds can be unsightly and compete with grass for sunlight, water, and nutrients.
Soil Compaction
Heavy foot traffic, garden furniture and poor soil structure can lead to soil compaction, which restricts root growth and inhibits water and air infiltration.
Lawn Moss
Moss tends to thrive in damp, shaded areas with poor drainage and compacted soil. It can compete with grass for nutrients and space, leading to thinning and bare grass patches in the lawn.
Bare Patches
These can be caused by dry patch through the summer, pests eating the roots, wear and tear, puddles and water logging. Overseeding, top dressing, scarification, aeration, wetting agent will usually resolve the issue.
Shade
Shade from trees, hedges, buildings, fencing or structures can inhibit grass growth by reducing sunlight exposure. Overseeding with shade-tolerant grass species may be required in areas with limited sunlight.
Thatch
Thatch is a layer of dead grass, roots, and other organic matter that accumulates on the soil surface. Excessive thatch can prevent water and nutrients from reaching the grass roots and provide a breeding ground for lawn pests and lawn diseases.
Worm Casts on Lawn
These are small piles of soil left on the lawn surface by worms. Only a few species of worms actually cast. This can normally be treated with top dressing and scarification.
Yellow Patch Grass
Lawns may suffer from nutrient deficiencies, lack of nitrogen is the most common reason, or if the soil pH is imbalanced or if fertilisation practices are inadequate. Symptoms include yellow patch grass, poor growth, and increased susceptibility to lawn pests and lawn diseases.
Poor Drainage
Lawns with poor drainage can become waterlogged during periods of heavy rain, leading to root suffocation, fungal diseases, and lawn moss growth.
Drought
This is caused by a lack of water and made worse by poor root development. Aeration, irrigation methods and top dressing will usually resolve the issue.
Thin lawns
This can be caused by compaction, water logging, wear and tear and shade. Our Lawn Health Plans, aeration, overseeding will be able to help.
Uneven Levels
Uneven surfaces in lawns can be unsightly and even dangerous. Top dressing with fine materials like lawn sand can help level out uneven surfaces, creating a smoother and more aesthetically pleasing lawn.
Addressing lawn problems often requires a combination of watering, fertilisation, lawn mowing, scarification, aeration, as well as targeted treatments for lawn pests, lawn diseases, and soil issues.
Regular lawn maintenance and monitoring are key to keeping the lawn healthy and resilient against common lawn problems.
