New Lawn

Sometimes you just have to accept that no amount of lawn renovation will help, and the best course of action is to lay a new lawn.

Alternatively, you may have purchased a new build property where the lawn needs to be laid or have completely renovated your garden and need a new lawn.

When we talk about a new lawn, we mean a freshly established area of grass or new turf that will be laid or seeded.

Laying a new lawn

Before laying turf or sowing grass seed, we ensure the area designated for the new lawn is prepared. This involves clearing the site of debris, weeds, rocks, and other obstacles.

The soil may also need to be levelled and loosened to break up any compacted areas and create a smooth, even surface for the new grass to establish. We may scarify or aerate the soil if required.

Homeowners typically choose between laying new turf or sowing grass seed for establishing a new lawn. The choice depends on factors such as budget, time constraints, and personal preference.

New turf provides instant results and can be laid throughout the growing season.

If turf is chosen, rolls of turf are laid out over the prepared soil, ensuring that the edges are tightly butted together to prevent gaps.

Seeding is more cost-effective than laying turf and offers a wider variety of grass species. We use Rye grass seed, as it looks good, germinates quickly and has good wear tolerance.

If seeding is chosen, grass seed is spread evenly over the prepared soil using a grass seed spreader. We then mulch the area with our pump.

Grass seeds develop a stronger and deeper root system compared to turf, making the lawn more resilient to drought, foot traffic, and other stresses over time.

Growing a lawn from new grass seed is generally considered more environmentally sustainable than laying turf. It requires fewer resources for production, transportation, and installation, resulting in a lower carbon footprint.

Wildflower Meadow

New lawns can incorporate an area for wildflowers. Not only does this add an area of interest and beauty to your lawn, but it’s also great for reducing lawn maintenance and improving ecological value and wildlife.

We can establish a wildflower meadow from meadow flower seeds or meadow turf.

New Lawn Aftercare

Whatever route you choose, proper watering is essential for the establishment of a new lawn. The soil should be kept consistently moist, but not waterlogged, to promote germination and root development. Watering frequency and duration depend on weather conditions, soil type, and grass species.

Turf aftercare

It’s very important to keep the turf damp in order to encourage the lawn to establish. If it dries out it will shrink and eventually die. The turf is generally transported quite dry and so will need irrigation immediately after it’s laid.

The turf will require regular irrigation for the first 2 weeks at least. This will vary depending on the season and weather.

There is a quick test to check how the lawn is rooting and so will determine when to change to a heavier irrigation plan and first cut: find a corner and try and pull the turf up – if it feels like velcro, it can be cut and watered as per normal.

Seed aftercare

In order to ensure the most consistent and quickest germination the seed needs to be kept damp. We can help with this along with the regular irrigation.

Generally after 3 weeks the seedlings would be ready for a treatment. In another 2 weeks with regular irrigation, it should be ready for a first cut.

Usually with another 3 weeks of cutting and irrigation the lawn should be looking good.

After the turf is laid or the grass seed is sown, it’s important to avoid heavy foot traffic on the new lawn until the grass is well established. Depending on the type of grass, the first lawn mowing may be required a few weeks after installation to encourage healthy growth and density.

Establishing a new lawn requires careful planning, proper preparation, and consistent lawn maintenance to achieve lush, healthy green grass that enhances your garden.
