Our Story

About me

I’m Mike Taylor, founder of 1840 Lawn Care, based in Croydon and the surrounding areas.

Having studied a degree in turfgrass science, I have built up my many years of experience in the turf industry working at a golf course and for a private individual on a very large estate.

I started 1840 Lawn Care in 2019 to offer something different. I wanted to bring the knowledge and experience of working on these types of high-end large-scale projects to your lawn at home.

What's with the name?

In the 17th Century, large homes and wealthy landowners had their grass shorn closely.

Then in 1830 Edwin Budding invented the lawn mower. This drastically reduced the manpower required to cut a lawn, and so allowed the less wealthy to have a nice lawn too.

The invention of the lawn mower, along with globalisation during the 1840s, made lawns fashionable, and easier to maintain, across the world.

Philosophy and Values

There are few key principles that guide the lawn care programs we put together.

The first is ‘healthy soil leads to a healthy lawn’

The second is ‘the top is a reflection of the bottom’.

This means, in order to have a lawn that is strong and healthy, the soil needs to support it. So, we feed the soil, we irrigate the soil and we work the soil, in order to support the biological and chemical cycles that go on in the soil and plants.

This is key to having a lawn that will tolerate stresses like the weather, kids and pests.

How do we work?

We view lawn care as a journey, everyone has a different starting point and path to their destination.

Our customer relationships are also on a journey, we want to build trust and so are happy to adapt our approach and offer a bespoke service for your lawn care needs and budget.
