Overseeding
Overseeding refers to a lawn renovation treatment, where grass seed is spread over an existing lawn.
Overseeding can help rejuvenate an old or tired-looking lawn, increase the density of the grass, fill in bare grass patches, or introduce new grass varieties to enhance the overall appearance and health of the lawn.
It can also improve its resilience to lawn diseases, lawn pests, and environmental stresses.
What does Overseeding involve?

We use Rye grass seed, as it looks good, germinates quickly and has good wear tolerance.
To prepare your existing lawn for overseeding we mow it short, remove any debris, and possibly aerate the soil to improve seed-to-soil contact. Alternatively, we may just turn over the soil to break up any compacted areas and then rake it to get a rough level.
The area is then consolidated to firm up the surface and then raked again to get a final level.
After preparation, the grass seed is evenly spread over the lawn using a grass seed spreader and mulched using our pump.
Why is Overseeding important?
Overseeding is important in the UK for several reasons:
Bare
Grass Patches
Over time, your lawn can develop bare grass patches due to heavy foot traffic, pet activity, or lawn diseases. Overseeding fills in these bare patches, restoring your lawn to its lush green appearance.
Thicken
Existing Grass
Overseeding encourages the growth of new grass alongside existing grass, which helps thicken the overall turf. This reduces the likelihood of soil erosion, enhances the lawn’s ability to absorb water, and improves its overall resilience to wear, tear and other stress factors.
Improves
Resistance
to Stress
A dense and healthy lawn resulting from overseeding is more resistant to stress factors such as drought, lawn diseases, and lawn pests. This helps maintain the lawn’s vitality throughout the year, even during periods of environmental stress.
Introducing New Grass Varieties
Overseeding allows you to introduce new grass varieties that may be better suited to your local climate, soil conditions, or specific lawn requirements. This can improve the overall health and appearance of your lawn and make it more resistant to lawn pests, lawn diseases, and other challenges.
Improving Lawn Health
New grass seedlings help replenish nutrients in the soil, reduce thatch buildup, and enhance soil structure, leading to improved overall lawn health.
When is the best time to sow lawn seed?
Overseeding is often carried out in the autumn when soil temperatures are still warm, and there is increased moisture in the air.
This provides optimal conditions for seed germination and establishment, allowing the new grass seedlings to take root before the onset of winter.
Once the seeds are distributed, it is essential the lawn is watered regularly to keep the soil moist until the new grass seedlings become established. The more consistent you are with watering the quicker you will see results.

Overseeding Aftercare
The most important thing to convey is that seed needs water in order to germinate. To ensure the best results keep the seed damp and
avoid mowing for 2 weeks. This generally means regular light irrigation until the seedlings are visible.
Once the seedlings appear the lawn can be cut and irrigated as per normal.
